Often times you take photos using your iPhone or other portable devices and you want to print them out. Or maybe your are one of those people who uses PDA, iPhone, or Blackberry to work away from the office and a lot of times in need to print documents on the go. Surely you can transfer the files to your computer in multiple ways but having to carry around extra gadgets or cables just to be able to print is a hassle for anyone. Bluetooth technology allows you to print documents or photos directly from your cell phone or other portable devices that has built-in Bluetooth to your printer.

So how does it work?

Bluetooth is a wireless technology utilizing low-frequency to establish connections between short-range devices. This technology is perfect to replace cables connecting portable or fixed electronic devices.

Almost all portable devices today has built-in Bluetooth for file sharing but double check to be sure. Check your printer if it is Bluetooth enabled or compatible. Bluetooth compatible printers usually have the Bluetooth logo on the printer itself or the manual.

Bluetooth enabled printer means it has built-in Bluetooth which makes it ready to use.

Bluetooth compatible printer means it supports Bluetooth wireless technology, including Bluetooth wireless adapter but is not yet ready to use. This means that you have to buy one of those Bluetooth USB wireless adapters or dongle. It allows multiple Bluetooth devices to be connected simultaneously.

If your printer is Bluetooth ready, then all you have to do is pair your portable device with your printer. Pairing simply means establishing connection and exchanging passkey on both devices. Make sure that Bluetooth is turned ON on both devices so they can discover each other. After pairing is completed, you can start printing documents or photos from your phone or portable device. An option to print via Bluetooth should now appear when you try to print.

If your printer does not have built-in Bluetooth, then get one of those Bluetooth USB dongle and insert it in the USB port of your printer. Some printer models call this port camera or PictBridge port. Refer to your manual if you are unsure. After you have inserted the dongle, proceed with device pairing and that’s it! You can now enjoy the freedom and convenience of wireless technology using Bluetooth.
